USA Badminton Files for Chapter 11 Reorganization: What Tournament Players Need to Know

USA Badminton, the national governing body that sanctions tournaments, runs memberships and selects national teams, has announced that it is going through a Chapter 11 financial reorganization. If you play sanctioned events, coach, or have a junior player on the circuit, here is what the organization has said so far, what it has not said, and what to keep an eye on.

## What was announced

In a statement from its Board of Directors published on October 5, 2026, USA Badminton said it has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 reorganization. According to the statement, the board approved the decision on August 24, 2026.

The board describes the move as a financial decision. Its stated goal is to restructure the organization's liabilities and put it on a stable financial footing. The statement does not list the amount of debt involved, name the court, or give a timeline for the process.

The board also separates this from a second, ongoing piece of work: an organizational restructuring with the Badminton World Federation (BWF) under what both sides call a joint "Reset Plan." The two run in parallel, but the Chapter 11 filing is the financial track.

## What Chapter 11 generally means

In general terms, Chapter 11 is the part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code that lets an organization keep operating while it works out a plan to reorganize its debts under court supervision. It is different from Chapter 7, where an organization stops operating and its assets are sold. How any particular case plays out depends on the court and the plan that is approved, so we're not going to guess at outcomes here.

## What continues

This is the part most players care about. USA Badminton's statement says that the following continue as normal:

- Sanctioned tournaments - Athlete programs - Coaching certifications - Day-to-day operations

The national calendar reflects that. USA Badminton's adult tournament schedule, updated October 16, still lists the **2026 Bay Badminton Championships** in Milpitas (November 27–29), the **LA International Series** at SGV Badminton Club in El Monte (December 8–13) and the **2026 U.S. Adult National Championships** at Peak Sports in Morrisville, North Carolina (December 19–22). On October 16 it also posted an updated prospectus for the Bay Badminton Championships, and it has continued to publish news on U.S. players at international events.

## What hasn't been answered yet

The statement does not say anything specific about membership fees, ranking points or member benefits. It also doesn't say how long the process is expected to take.

Members were supposed to be able to ask questions directly at a **Member Town Hall** on October 15. USA Badminton has postponed it. The organization says it expects to set a new date within about four weeks, and that people who already filled out the RSVP form will get an updated invitation with Zoom details. The RSVP form is still open and asks for your name, email, membership ID and any questions, so board members can prepare answers ahead of time.

## What to do if you play tournaments

1. **Keep your membership current.** Sanctioned events still require it. The Bay Badminton Championships prospectus notes that memberships are now renewed through the Club Locker system, so check that your account works well before an entry deadline. 2. **Read each prospectus.** Entry deadlines, fees and eligibility are set event by event. For example, Bay Badminton Championships entries close November 17 at 11:59 PM Pacific. 3. **Send your questions to the town hall.** If you have a specific concern, the RSVP form is the most direct route to the board. 4. **Follow official channels.** We'll update this story when USA Badminton publishes more, and every sanctioned event we list on the OutRally calendar links to its official entry page.

## The bottom line

Nothing in USA Badminton's announcement changes this fall's tournament calendar. Events on the schedule are still going ahead, and the organization says its programs continue. The open questions are about money and timing, and the postponed town hall is the place where members should get more answers.
