Big weeks in Europe, a busy run of tournaments in California, and two new guides from us. Here's what you need to know for October 12–18.
## Tournaments: Denmark takes over Vantaa, Odense is next
The **Arctic Open** (Super 500) wrapped up in Vantaa, Finland on Sunday, and Denmark had a very good day:
- **Men's singles:** Anders Antonsen (DEN) beat Yushi Tanaka (JPN) 16-21, 21-16, 27-25 - **Women's singles:** Mia Blichfeldt (DEN) beat Ratchanok Intanon (THA) 21-17, 21-13 - **Men's doubles:** Aaron Tai / Yap Roy King (MAS) beat Lai Po Yu / Tsai Fu Cheng (TPE) 21-19, 21-19 - **Women's doubles:** Chen Fan Shu Tian / Luo Xu Min (CHN) beat Hsu Yin-Hui / Lin Jhih Yun (TPE) 21-18, 21-19 - **Mixed doubles:** Jiang Zhen Bang / Wei Ya Xin (CHN) beat Gao Jia Xuan / Wu Meng Ying (CHN) 21-18, 21-16
The tour moves straight to the **Denmark Open** (Super 750) in Odense, October 13–18, then the **French Open** (Super 750) near Paris, October 20–25. The season ends with the **BWF World Tour Finals** in Hangzhou, China, December 9–13.
## Tournaments: closer to home
Southern California's fall calendar is filling up. All of these are on the OutRally events calendar with registration links:
- **HBDF HANA Challenge** — Saturday, October 17, Santa Fe Springs Badminton Club. The club has posted that the gym is closed to regular play that day for the event. - **PBCA Oktoberfest** — Saturday, October 24, SGV Badminton Club, El Monte. - **SoCal Closed Regional Championship (Junior)** — November 21–22, SGV Badminton Club. - **LA Open 2026** (BWF International Series) — December 8–13, SGV Badminton Club.
New this week in Northern California: the **2026 Bay Badminton Championships** run November 27–29 at Bay Badminton Center in Milpitas. The Open events are a USA Badminton 6-star national ranking tournament, and B through E levels are offered too. Entries close November 17 at 11:59 PM Pacific, and fees are paid in cash at the desk.
Looking further ahead, USA Badminton has announced that the **2026 U.S. Adult National Championships** will be held December 19–22 at Peak Sports in Morrisville, North Carolina. The prospectus and selection procedure have not been released yet; we'll add it to the calendar once entry details are public.
## Venues: El Monte's late-night option
This Wednesday we're spotlighting **Los Angeles Badminton Club** at 10410 Valley Blvd in El Monte: 15 courts, a pro shop with stringing, and showers. Walk-in play is $9 on weekdays and $10 on weeknights and weekends, according to the club's pricing page. Court bookings are online only, and same-day bookings open at 9:30 PM the night before. Everyone on a reserved court needs a membership or a daily guest pass.
Heading to Santa Fe Springs this Saturday? Remember the gym is closed for the HANA Challenge, so plan your session somewhere else or go and watch.
## Learn: the split step
Our new technique guide breaks down the **split step**, the small, quick drop that lets you push off in any direction the moment your opponent hits.
